To be honest, this would be my first time watching it now, and special thank to an unkown "friend" who opened my eyes to such stunning art, but I can't forget how much I laughed ; I wondered why I would make such effort just for liking some random page on facebook ! I really took it as a kind of amusement, education so I could be more productive in such page ^^ my hot chocolate on the desk, my book in my hands, in case the film didnt catch my attention and nothing more but excpectations droven by my trust to that unknown person's taste.
When I was watching this movie, I hardly ever took my eyes off of Gloria Swanson whenever she was on-screen. Whenever she arches her eyebrows and her eyes get big and she starts to go crazy, her performance is so magnetic. She truly becomes her character. So I had to learn more more about her, how it wasn't hard for her to do; Well she, after all, was a glamorous silent film star herself who had all but disappeared from the scene for years before this movie was made. But her sharp delivery of the dialogue makes you believe every word she says. That isn't to say that the rest of the film isn't good. William Holden was very good, especially in those biting, darkly funny voice-overs. Erich Von Stroheim wass very eerie as the devoted butler Max. The direction focuses heavily on the dark, fobodding, almost misty atmosphere of the whole thing, and the movie's all the better for it. But the best thing undoubtedly is Gloria Swanson's amazing performance as the greatest star of them all, Norma Desmond.
I was a little speechless after I first finished watching Sunset Blvd. I had an idea of what to expect, but I didn't expect that a film made over half a century ago would be so sharp, so artistically compelling, and so tragic while still containing a blistering sense of humor. In some ways it was ahead of its time with its satire, ironically in a film that looks to the past with a sense of sad, but honest nostalgia.
"I am big; it's the PICTURES that got small!"
"All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my CLOSEUP!"
This movie is true genius, it's funny, it's romantic, it's sly, and at times very weird. I can't wait to see it again.. The fantastic and intriguing opening scene, the deep story line, and even the similarities between the characters and the real life people who play them make for one of the greatest movies of all time.
I will stop spoiling it for you . All you need is have some trust (like I did) and you will not be desepointed !
